How we work out the cost
The sum is simple: energy used (kWh) multiplied by your unit rate. A sauna that draws an average of 1.5 kW for 40 minutes uses 1 kWh, which costs 26.32p at 26.32p per kWh.
We use the power rating the brand publishes and assume the heater runs flat out for the whole session. In real use, steamers and heaters cycle on and off once they are hot, so your actual cost will usually be lower.
Your cost will run higher in a colder room, with a longer warm-up, or if you top up the steamer mid-session.
Questions
How much does it cost to run a portable sauna?
Usually pennies. At full power, a 30-minute session costs between 5p and 16p at 26.32p per kWh. Sauna blankets are cheapest to run; steam tents with big steamers use the most.
Will it really cost that much?
Probably less. Heaters and steamers switch off and on once they are up to temperature, so they rarely draw full power for the whole session. Our figures assume full power, so treat them as the most you will pay.
Which unit rate should I use?
The figure on your latest energy bill, in pence per kWh. If you are on a standard variable tariff, it is close to the Ofgem price cap: 26.32p per kWh for direct debit customers from October to December 2026 (a Great Britain average).
Does the standing charge change the cost?
No. You pay the daily standing charge whether or not you use the sauna, so it is left out.
